Tolerance, kindness, trust and honesty are becoming rarer commodities in society. The Way to Happiness program is a grass-roots movement to bring about an increase in tolerance and understanding and a restoration of fundamental values in society. The program is based on the book The Way to Happiness, written in 1981 by L. Ron Hubbard to provide a non-religious common-sense guide to better living and to restore integrity and trust to humankind.
The Way to Happiness is comprised of 21 precepts, or general rules for behavior, including “Respect the Religious Beliefs of Others”; “Love and Help Children”, “Honor and Help Your Parents”; “Seek to Live with the Truth”; “Safeguard and Improve Your Environment”; “Be Worthy of Trust” and “Try to Treat Others as You Would Want Them to Treat You.”
The Way to Happiness has been published in 114 languages and over 100 million copies have been distributed in 170 countries. It is used across the globe by various groups and organizations, such as schools, youth community groups, police programs, prisons and governments, to bring about more tolerance and safer conditions.
Moral standards have declined over the decades, and no one has been more affected than our children and teenagers. The proliferation of drugs, violence in schools, and a loss of moral compass are just some of the challenges our youth has to deal with.
At Scientology Houston, we participate in The Way to Happiness program by handing out booklets and participating in projects such as beach and creek cleanups and school educational programs.
The Foundation for a Drug-Free World is a nonprofit public benefit corporation that empowers youth and adults with factual information about drugs so they can make informed decisions and live drug-free.
The Truth About Drugs social betterment program is made available free of charge to educators worldwide, in recognition that the solution to drug use is to reduce the demand through education. When young people learn the facts about drugs and their effects, they tend to decide for themselves to stay away from them.
The Truth About Drugs fact-filled booklets on commonly abused drugs educates young people on what drugs are and what they do. Booklets are available for:
The Volunteer Minister (VM) program was launched more than thirty years ago, in response to an appeal by Scientology Founder L. Ron Hubbard.
Noting a tremendous downturn in the level of ethics and morality in society, and a consequent increase in drugs and crime, Mr. Hubbard wrote, “If one does not like the crime, cruelty, injustice and violence of this society, he can do something about it. He can become a VOLUNTEER MINISTER and help civilize it, bring it conscience and kindness and love and freedom from travail by instilling into it trust, decency, honesty and tolerance.”
Accordingly, in addition to traveling to wherever disaster strikes, Volunteer Ministers work with public servants in their own communities, helping to improve conditions right at home. Their information and training centers are bright yellow tents open to the public at weekend events and fairs, where anyone may enroll on a course or seminar that is delivered right in the tent.
Our Volunteer Minister chapter is very active and played a major role in rebuilding Houston after Hurricane Harvey.
